This Actually Happened the First Time I Taught Yoga Online

Nourish Note

During the first yoga class I ever taught on Zoom in April 2020, my power went out — not once, but twice. First during the opening meditation, and then again about 10 minutes later after we had already started moving.

As I waited for the power to come back on and the WiFi to reconnect both times, I had to laugh a little.

There I was: a yoga teacher teaching my very first online class, while the universe seemed to be reminding me of one of yoga’s biggest lessons: Everything is temporary.

Eventually, the lights came back on. The WiFi reconnected. And the students were still there when I returned.

That moment stays with me because it reminds me how deeply yoga is needed — then and now.

As life gets busier and attention gets pulled in a hundred different directions, it’s easy to feel disconnected from yourself.

Time on the yoga mat helps you return to center. It reminds you that the peace you create within yourself ripples into every part of your life.

And somewhere along the way, this yoga teacher who had only ever taught in-person classes started teaching online, too.

Now, I’m excited to share that beginning June 10, I’m opening a new Zoom option for my Wednesday yoga classes.

Registration is open for the summer yoga series, and classes start this week:

If you’d like to get started with these classes — whether in person or on Zoom — you can find all the details here. I’d love to welcome you into our yoga community.

One question I often get is whether online yoga classes are as effective as practicing in person. The answer is yes — and for many students, the convenience of practicing from home makes it easier to stay consistent.

If you're curious about online yoga but aren't sure where to begin, my latest blog post covers:

  • What to look for in an online yoga class
  • How to set up your practice space
  • Simple ways to create a meaningful practice at home

Whether you choose to join a class online or in person, the most important thing is finding a class that supports you and fits your life.

I welcome everyone from beginners to students who have been practicing longer than I’ve been teaching, which is more than 15 years.

And if you’ve been showing up on your mat with me every week — thank you. Your presence, consistency and commitment are inspiring.

I’m curious — if yoga is part of your routine, how many years have you been practicing? Hit reply and let me know — I read every message.

With so much gratitude,
Julie

P.S. Thinking about joining a class in person or on Zoom? Here are the links to sign up for the summer series that start this week: Ayurvedic Yoga (begins June 8) and Yoga for Self-Care (begins June 10).

Nourish Note When was the last time you had a quiet moment without reaching for your phone? No scrolling. No checking messages. No filling the silence. Just being there, with yourself. I’ve been thinking about this because I recently wrote about something I never expected to become such a big part of my life: my smartphone. I didn’t get one until 2013. (I finally gave in when my phone provider offered a smartphone for free. I’ve upgraded since then, but that first phone lasted me for years.)...

Nourish Note Before I had the Ayurvedic self-care routine I have now, I used to sometimes resist starting self-care habits I knew would help me feel better. I’d read about them, learn everything I could and push them off — telling myself I’d get to them someday. But when someday never came, I realized I’d been waiting for the “right” time to start — and that wasn’t getting me anywhere. Actually doing it was what mattered. The habit that started my journey into Ayurveda was an incredibly...
